One of my favorite ways to relax and unwind is to brew and sip a nice cup of hot tea. January is National Hot Tea Month and I had the opportunity to sample an amazing selection of tea from Stash to celebrate the occasion! Tea is essential to my personal self-care routine, but here are 5 mental health benefits of drinking hot tea you may want to consider as you brew your next cup.

  1. Heightens Your Focus - Studies have shown that there is a property in black tea (specifically L-Theanine) that has been shown to improve the brain’s ability to focus. If coffee is a little too strong for your tastes, consider trying a cup of Stash’s Earl Grey tea.

  2. Decreases Stress - We can feel the effects of the stress hormone cortisol when we become overwhelmed with work, familial obligations or simply life in general. L-Theanine in black tea has also been shown to decrease both stress and fatigue.

  3. Increases Relaxation - Chamomile tea has long been known to aid in stress reduction, help improve sleep and decrease stress. This chamomile blend with apple and cinnamon is a delicious combination that left me feeling more relaxed after every sip!

  4. Boosts Your Mood - Caffeine, especially is small doses, can significantly improve your mood and boost your energy. With a hint of lavender for an added tranquility bonus, Stash’s Breakfast In Paris black tea is a great option if you’re looking to give yourself a mood-booster.

  5. Improves Your Memory - Whether you are pursuing academic, professional and/or entrepreneurial goals, your ability to recall information can be critical to your success. Green tea has been shown to improve overall brain function which definitely makes sipping a cup a smart choice.

Embracing the ritual itself of preparing a great cup of tea can also allow you to unwind and emotionally prepare yourself for a special self-care moment. Create a special experience by using a special mug and enjoying your tea in a physical space that brings you peace.
